Congratulations!
If you’re here that means you are looking to add to your wardrobe, either for a new job or just to add some professionalism to your closet! I have been living in DC for a year and within that time I have worked in three different congressional offices. I like to think I know a little something about fashion, versatility, and looking the part.
There are some basic rules to know and follow when shopping for professional pieces.
- Invest in good shoes and even better band-aids. At one point I had 9 pairs of beautiful flats that I COULD NOT wear because they gave me the worst blisters. I understand that money is tight sometimes but do yourself a favor and add a little research in your shoe hunt, your feet and ankles will thank you. Also, always carry bandaids in your purse or desk because even the best shoes need to be broken in!
- Blazers- have at least one in black and then go from there. My favorite color? Pink. I own several pink blazers in different shades and patterns. H&M, JC Penney, and New York &CO. are great places to start!
- Spandex shorts… BUY THEM. I don’t care if you think you don’t need shorts under your dress, you do. I had one scandalous event that led to me walking around commando because my black underwear was visible through my blue dress. Just don’t make the mistake that I did.
- Keep deodorant, perfume, Tylenol, and pads/tampons in your purse at all times. Even if you’re not on your period, we don’t like messy surprises and your coworkers will love you if you come to their rescue.
- Headbands will save your life. I’ve recently cut my hair above my shoulders and sometimes I am completely out of hairstyle ideas. I’ve purchased a ton of fashionable headbands from Forever 21 and H&M. These are my go-to statement pieces when my hair needs help! (The pearl headbands are my favorite, thank you Blair Waldorf)
- Brands may seem scary but they can be affordable. Example: New York& Company and Ann Taylor may seem expensive but they have a lot of sales! I have purchased several pants in different colors for work and they are amazing, some even under $25. Even if fancy or professional stores seem intimidating, you have to walk in. You’ll see wonderful examples of professional outfits and learn that you CAN afford to dress in a way that suits your body and prepares you for any professional event!
- TAILOR. Please don’t try to wear pants that are clearly too long for you. I’m 4’11” and as much as it pains me, the majority of my professional pants need to be hemmed. While the cost may add up, it is a necessity for shorter gals. You can do what I did- get one pair done at a time.
- Makeup- Whether you like to wear a lot or a little, just make sure it looks good. I absolutely love to wear false eyelashes and refuse to think they are “unprofessional.” Just a recommendation- don’t do a heavy smokey eye and red lip for a Tuesday at work. Save the sexy for happy hour and Instagram. Whatever you wear, make it tasteful.
- PURSE! Invest in at least one quality work bag, one going out/happy hour bag, and a cheaper Target bag. Some of my favorite work purses are Kate Spade, Michael Kors, and Tory Burch. Though they can be pricey, I’ve purchased plenty of Kate Spade purses that ticketed below $100. I use crossbody bags often and have a few cute Target bags I use on weekends. I have a puppy and live by my cheaper but still stylish Target bags so if they get worn out, I’m not nearly as devastated. You can never have too many handbags!
- Give em a little razzle dazzle! Ladies, ‘m just going to say something we were all made aware of at a young age. The way we look matters. The way we present ourselves in social and professional settings will carry weight. The way a colleague perceives you is important. We need to look AND act the part. If you like to dress in neutrals, wear something that will POP. Statement earrings, a necklace you love, a pretty headband or even a colored blazer. Make a statement with your outfit, add color and be bold in your choices. Make them notice you, attitude AND outfit. Whatever you wear to work, make sure you feel good and comfortable in it.
Now Go and Conquer!
